Why Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Won’t Sing Together on ‘1883’: ‘Not Even on Our Radar’

Taylor Sheridan’s new show 1883, featuring real-life husband and wife country singers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, has obliterated most of the sting fans are currently feeling after the season 4 finale of

Yellowstone. Like Yellowstone, the spinoff has already scored some records. It’s shattered the Paramount+ record for the most-watched original series ever. We doubt that will be the end of its records.

With only five episodes so far, 1883 is shaping up to be just as thrilling and dramatic as Yellowstone. However, there’s one thing viewers shouldn’t expect to see on the show any time soon; McGraw and Hill singing together.

Why Tim McGraw and Faith Hill won’t sing together on ‘1883’

McGraw and Hill play James and Margaret Dutton, the great-grandparents of John Dutton, Kevin Costner’s character in Yellowstone. McGraw has acting credits in Friday Night Lights, The Blind Side, and Tomorrowland. However, just because he has more acting experience under his belt than his wife doesn’t mean Hill hasn’t held her own in 1883 so far.

Acting aside, the first thing that comes to fans’ minds when they see the couple is their music. Both singers have given us some of the best country tunes since the 1990s. So, it’s only natural that fans would assume they would use their singing chops for a scene in 1883.

Apparently, and disappointingly, it’s not even on their radar. During an interview with Taste of Country in Dec. 2021, McGraw said that fans shouldn’t expect to see the Duttons singing together in 1883 any time soon.

“This show is really about an epic score, not so much songs or anything like that,” McGraw said. However, that doesn’t mean 1883 hasn’t inspired McGraw to write songs.

McGraw said ‘1883’ isn’t the type of show that would see characters like the Duttons perform together

Being a musician at heart, how could McGraw not be inspired to write songs about everything his character goes through in 1883? That doesn’t mean McGraw can picture the Duttons performing.

“I mean, I’ve written songs, it’s inspired me to write songs that have a theme that sometimes revolve around some of the things that happen on the show, but it’s not that kind of show,” McGraw continued. “It’s not a show that’s gonna have anything to do with us singing.

“We’re not gonna turn it into a Broadway play,” McGraw laughed. “My character, James, I can’t imagine him ever singing a note. He’s not an artistic guy.”

Hopefully, we’ll get to hear the songs McGraw wrote during his time in 1883. Maybe he’ll release an album with the tunes instead of performing them on the show.

‘Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes is starting a music career but doesn’t think Kacey Dutton would perform on the show either

During an interview with ET, Luke Grimes, who plays Kacey Dutton on Yellowstone, said he wants to start a music career. Maybe he should consult his great-great-grandparents. ET showed Grimes a 2008 interview of his 24-year-old self talking about singing and playing in a band.

When asked if Grimes’s Kacey will ever sing on Yellowstone in the future, Grimes gave a similar response to McGraw. “I think it would be weird if [my Yellowstone character] Kayce started singing. But here pretty soon, you’ll see Luke singing,” Grimes said.

So, it seems that Ryan Bingham, who plays Walker on Yellowstone, will continue to be the only real-life singer to perform on the show and its extended universe.

However, fans should look on the bright side. We know we’ll continue to get new music from McGraw, Hill, and eventually Grimes. We might even get an album of songs from McGraw that was inspired by 1883. Who knows what will happen in both shows down the line.

Fans should also consider another thing. A day may come where the cast of all three of Sheridan’s shows, Yellowstone, 1883, and the upcoming 6666, will come together to celebrate the Yellowstone extended universe, and we might get to see McGraw, Hill, Grimes, and Bingham perform together. That would be a sight to see. It would be as beautiful as a Montana sunrise.
