‘Rick and Morty’ Gets an Anime Spinoff

Adult Swim’s hit animated series Rick and Morty is getting a new look, and this time in the form of an anime. The series follows a genius scientist named Rick Sanchez, the smartest human in the entire galaxy. With his grandson, Morty Smith, they venture across dimensions on missions. While the new anime uses the beloved characters, it will be a standalone storyline.

‘Rick and Morty: The Anime’ will be directed by Takashi Sano

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adult Swim is venturing into new territory with Rick and Morty. The network has ordered a 10-episode anime series led by Sano. The director is best known for his work on the Tower of God anime series from 2020. Fans of the original series will have seen Sano’s work before. He has directed two shorts for Rick and Morty, “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider” and “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil).”

Sano had this statement about his directorial lead for the anime, “The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion. It’s such a life affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception. I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

The director explains Rick and Morty: The Anime will center on a new story. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the anime will use the main events fans have seen in the series and overall themes. But it will deviate in some ways and stand as an original work.

While news of the anime is exciting for fans, they are still waiting for Rick and Morty Season 6. In 2018, Adult Swim ordered 70 episodes of the animated sitcom series. Since then, the network has developed most of its quota but still has a long way to go. In June of 2021, Rick and Morty Season 5 premiered 10 episodes total, with a mid-season finale in between.

The season 5 finale blew fans’ minds as Evil Morty manages to break free of all the Ricks in the universe by breaking the Infinite Curve. Fans are clamoring to know what this means for the next season, whether Evil Morty will return or how it will affect Morty and Rick.

According to TV Line in March, fans got a small update about the sixth season, but nothing concrete. A source says the sixth season is currently in production and will premiere sometime later in the year. It can be assumed that the season will follow a similar structure of 10 episodes with a break after the fifth and mid-season finale.
