In her book, Black Heels to Tractor Wheels, Drummond talks about her and Ladd’s love story and how their relationship unfolded. She says she finally received an invitation to Ladd’s home for their fifth date. She was so smitten, there was no way she was going to decline this cowboy’s invitation.

Drummond says they had a second date, a third, and then the fourth. She says after each date, Ladd called her to confirm their next date. She was excited that he invited her to the ranch for their fifth date. According to Drummond, they were “clearly on some kind of a roll,” because Ladd now wanted her to see where he lived.

Ree Drummond offered to cook since there were no restaurants nearby

The ranch is a bit isolated, so Drummond offered to make a homecooked meal for Ladd. She wanted to impress him, so she made her fanciest meal, linguine with clam sauce. Drummond says it was one of her family’s favorite meals. Drummond says she “agonized for hours” over what she should cook for her new love. She wanted to prepare something that was “sophisticated,” so she settled on the linguine.

Ladd loves meat, but he ate Ree Drummond’s special linguine meal

Drummond was confident her linguine would be a hit. However, she didn’t realize Ladd is a big meat eater. She put so much time and effort into the meal, but later discovered she missed the mark. Initially, Drummond says she was “confident” her pasta meal would be a big hit. However, she later became aware that cattle ranchers don’t usually eat “minced up little clams bathed in wine and cream and tossed with long, unwieldy noodles that are difficult to negotiate.”

Although Ladd is a meat-and-potatoes guy, he still ate the meal Drummond prepared. In fact, he ate almost two plates of the linguine just so he could show his appreciation. Drummond says she made him a second plate of food because she thought he was still hungry.

Since he’s a cattle rancher, she thought it would be a good idea to fill up a second plate. He had to take a phone call, and when he was close to ending the call, she says she took his plate and piled on more pasta.

Drummond says when Ladd came back to the table, he smiled and ate the second helping before declaring that he was “stuffed” from the meal. She says he was polite about it even though he didn’t enjoy the meal. Drummond says at the time she didn’t realize how big of a romantic gesture Ladd made.
