One of ‘The Pioneer Woman’ Star Ree Drummond’s Least Popular Cake Recipes

Food Network star Ree Drummond can be counted on for quick, simple, and utterly delicious recipes. Whether savory or sweet, The Pioneer Woman host’s dishes are satisfying winners.

According to Food Network reviewers, however, one cake recipe of Drummond’s was something of a miss, leaving these home cooks perplexed and more than a little disappointed.

Drummond’s cakes are typically huge hits with her fans, especially her Dump Cake

From her Top Secret Chocolate Cake recipe to her Knock-You-Naked Brownies, Ree Drummond’s cakes and desserts are dependable crowdpleasers. Drummond herself is a relatable home cook adored by fans for her large family and an equally large arsenal of downright delicious dishes.

One such example is her Dump Cake, the ultimate easiest dessert.

As Drummond writes on her Pioneer Woman blog, it comes together with just a handful of ingredients: “The Cast of Characters: Cherry Pie Filling, Crushed Pineapple, Yellow (or white) cake mix, Margarine, and Butter. DUMP 1 can of cherry pie filling into a baking dish. (I used 9 x 13). Next, DUMP (are we seeing a pattern here?) 1 can of crushed pineapple into the dish.”

The pie filling and crushed pineapple are stirred together and then the cake mix is “sprinkled” over the mixture, followed by a stick of margarine and half a stick of butter, sliced and scattered over the dry cake mix. It’s baked at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or “until top is bubbly.”

Ree Drummond’s yellow cake is one of her lowest-rated recipes on Food Network’s site

Her Yellow Cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting received a few dozen three-starred reviews on the culinary channel’s website, falling far short of the host’s more typical five-star ratings.

While some home cooks were satisfied with the recipe, many others seemed disappointed in the cake’s texture.

“The cake looked airy and it was soft to touch but dry dry dry, we needed more than a [glass] of milk with it,” one reviewer wrote.

Another home cook said, “I should have read the reviews. I was extremely disappointed. This was the driest cake I have ever eaten. I followed the directions to the T. … What a waste of a half dozen eggs and a half-pound of butter.”

Others confirmed these ratings with comments including “This cake was so dry; it was awful” and “consists of complete and utter dryness.”

One remark summed the negative sentiments up, writing, “Sorry, Ree, not a hit.. probably your only recipe that I haven’t liked.”

Her frosting was also a letdown to some reviewers

Although home cooks on Food Network’s site were mostly focused on her cake recipe, Drummond’s frosting also earned some reviewers’ low ratings.

While there were those who said the frosting was “the stuff dreams are made of” and “delicious,” quite a few others felt otherwise.

“The frosting was way, way too sweet.  My two kids who have a huge sweet tooth said that.  For them to tell me it was too sweet was definitely a huge thing.  Don’t think I would try this one again and I LOVE Ree!,” one reviewer wrote.

Another agreed saying, “On the frosting (WAY too sweet), I cut the sugar almost in half and increased the cocoa powder to 1 cup+.”
